Future of Ann-Katrin Berger in German National Team: Uncertainty at DFB

В нескольких словах

The future of German national team goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger remains uncertain, as the DFB is considering a change in the primary goalkeeper due to long-term plans, despite her wish to continue playing.

The future of German national team goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger (35) within the German Football Association (DFB) remains uncertain. Discussions about her continued international career after the Nations League final against Spain (0-3), which took place on Tuesday evening, are still open, turning into an unpleasant and protracted issue.

Although it was established after last summer's European Championship that no decision would be made regarding Berger's future in the DFB, and discussions were to take place during the four Nations League matches in autumn, this did not happen. Berger was absent from the semi-final against France due to an injury, and played twice in the matches against Spain, but without any discussions being held with the management.

Instead, after the defeat in Madrid, public statements emerged suggesting a "power struggle." Berger stated: "I am proud to be part of this team and look forward to next year, to see what else is in the team." Regarding a possible participation in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, she added: "Brazil is a crazy football country, where it's definitely fun. If the coaches want me and we agree, we'll see what the future brings."

Berger's message is clear: she is ready to continue. Only the approval of the national coach is missing. Christian Wück (52) stated shortly after Berger's remarks: "You won't get that from me now. We will sit down at the table soon and make a decision by the end of this year."

This means that the discussion between Wück and Berger, in which goalkeeping coach Michael Fuchs (55) will also participate, will take place no later than Wednesday afternoon, at the allocation of the Euros – but this is not yet the final decision. It seems the DFB coaching staff will reflect further.

The reason for this long decision-making period: Berger is currently the best German goalkeeper. However, the DFB wants to immediately establish the "number 1" for the 2029 World Cup. According to information, there are doubts that Berger will still have the necessary form and health in a year and a half. Therefore, bringing in a successor is being considered as early as the next international match to give her playing experience. These could be Stina Johannes (25) from Wolfsburg or Ena Mahmutovic (21) from Bayern, who, however, are not yet as consistent in performance and personality as Berger.

There is a major risk for the DFB in the case of a goalkeeper change: if the successor makes mistakes, the calls for Berger will be just as loud as they were or are for Manuel Neuer (39) in the men's team. And, more importantly, Ann-Katrin Berger does not deserve to be removed against her will from the "number 1" position, given her strong games and impeccable character.
